Black Fortress (1830-1836 yy.)

“Black” Fortress in Gyumri was built in 1834. The need of building the fortress became essential after the end of the 2nd Russian-Persian war to strengthen Gyumri. Huge walls are constructed of black treated basalt. The construction was built according to the latest tendencies in military art. “Black” fortress was one of the rarest constructions in the composition of Russian Empire. It is noteworthy that Tsar Nikolai was present during the opening ceremony.  

Today the fortress is used as a cultural center and event hall.
